Disaster Profile 

A tornado tore through Birmingham Alabama, USA on April 27, 2011, causing destruction in its wake.

Our Work 

Following the devastation, we immediately engaged in a state-level support role. This would allow us to contribute valuable expertise to the then ongoing early recovery operations. Said operations were focused on connecting affected community members to available resources.

We were requested to provide Coordinative Services in support of the response and recovery efforts underway across the state. This was called for by the Alabama Governor’s Office for Faith-based and Community Initiatives and Alabama Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (AL VOAD). We worked closely with a strong, statewide 2-1-1 information and referral service. This enabled us to facilitate requests for volunteer assistance, as we did in Rhode Island. We also launched direct volunteer relief efforts. They were focused on tornado cleanup, doing debris cleanup, demolition, tree removal, and roof tarping and repair.
